DRAP makes 2D barcodes and serial numbers mandatory on all locally made and imported medicines from October 9, letting consumers verify authenticity by scanning the pack.

The Drug Regulatory Authority of Pakistan (DRAP) has made two-dimensional (2D) barcoding and serialization mandatory for all locally manufactured and imported pharmaceutical products. Medicines manufactured locally or imported on or after October 9 must carry a unique 2D Data Matrix barcode and serial number under the Pharmaceutical Track and Trace System. Consumers will be able to verify the authenticity of a medicine by scanning the code printed on its packaging, and the system aims to curb counterfeit, substandard and unregistered medicines.

What the New Rule Covers

  • The system is being introduced in phases, and the first phase covers all locally manufactured and imported pharmaceutical products.

  • It applies to both human and veterinary medicines.

  • Batches manufactured locally or imported before October 9, 2026 are exempt and remain permitted for import, distribution and sale.

Why DRAP Introduced It

DRAP said the Track and Trace System will help curb the circulation of spurious, falsified, counterfeit and unregistered medicines, make product recalls easier, and bring greater transparency and integrity to the supply chain. The authority said it is part of efforts to modernise the country’s pharmaceutical regulatory framework.

Manufacturers and Importers

DRAP has directed pharmaceutical manufacturers and importers to meet the technical requirements specified under the relevant rules, and warned that legal action will be initiated against violators. The authority has also held consultations with key stakeholders, including the Pakistan Pharmaceutical Manufacturers’ Association (PPMA), Pharma Bureau and medicine importers, to help with implementation.
