Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas postpones the November 2026 legislative elections and sets September 11, 2027 for both presidential and legislative elections.
Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas has postponed the legislative elections scheduled for November 28, 2026, and set September 11, 2027 as the new date for both presidential and legislative elections. According to Palestinian official media, a new presidential decree schedules the two elections for the same day. Under the revised schedule, Palestinians will vote on September 11, 2027 to elect their president and members of the Legislative Council.
How the Decision Was Reached
The decision follows a resolution by the executive committee of the Palestine Liberation Organisation (PLO) and consultations with various Palestinian political parties and factions. During the consultations, participants agreed that holding the elections as scheduled would face several difficulties under current circumstances. Palestinian political leaders and groups said Israeli actions were obstructing the electoral process, a claim attributed to them in the report.
Conditions for the Vote
The Palestinian leadership said favourable political, security and ground conditions are necessary to ensure free and fair elections with the participation of all sections of society.
