H1N1 Circulates in Karachi as Flu Cases Rise Ahead of Winter

Karachi hospitals report a rise in flu patients as H1N1 circulates. Doctors urge vaccination and precautions, especially for vulnerable groups.
Karachi is reporting a sharp increase in patients with flu-like symptoms as cooler weather approaches, while doctors have confirmed that the H1N1 strain of influenza is circulating in the city.
Aga Khan University Hospital has reported around 400 influenza cases this year, according to infectious disease specialist Professor Dr Faisal Mahmood. He warned that cases could increase further towards the end of the year.
At Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC), daily patients with flu-like symptoms have risen from around 30–40 to 70–80. Civil Hospital Karachi has also reported a significant increase in patients seeking treatment.
H1N1 Can Cause Serious Complications
H1N1 is a strain of influenza A that can cause symptoms such as fever, cough, runny nose and body aches. In some patients, particularly those at higher risk, the infection can lead to serious complications, including pneumonia.
Doctors have stressed that not every person reporting flu-like symptoms has H1N1. Laboratory testing is needed to confirm the specific infection, and testing is generally more common among seriously ill patients.
Doctors Advise Vaccination and Precautions
Medical experts have urged older people, children and individuals with weakened immune systems to consult healthcare professionals about annual influenza vaccination.
Residents have also been advised to wash their hands regularly, wear masks in crowded places, avoid close contact with sick people and stay home when experiencing flu symptoms.
Vaccine Safety Also Requires Attention
The increase in flu cases comes amid concerns about influenza vaccine availability and authenticity. DRAP recently warned about a falsified batch of Vaxigrip Tetra vaccine, identified as Y4B34, and advised the public not to use it.
Doctors recommend obtaining vaccines only through authorised healthcare providers and licensed pharmacies.
With influenza activity increasing, health experts say early precautions and timely medical advice are important to reduce the risk of serious illness during the approaching winter season.
