US Plans New Restrictions on Chinese Telecom Firms Over Security Concerns

The US FCC plans to restrict Chinese telecom companies from directly accessing US phone numbers, citing security and illegal robocall concerns.
The United States is planning new restrictions on Chinese telecommunications companies, including China Mobile, China Telecom and China Unicom, over national security concerns.
The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has proposed blocking these companies and other internet-based voice service providers from directly accessing US phone numbers.
The FCC is scheduled to vote on the proposal on November 19, 2026.
Security Concerns Behind the Move
US officials say the proposed restrictions aim to strengthen telecommunications security and prevent illegal robocalls and phone scams.
The FCC is also considering restrictions on service providers using equipment from Chinese companies such as Huawei and ZTE.
China has opposed the proposed measures, saying the United States is using national security concerns to restrict Chinese businesses. Beijing has also said it will protect the legitimate interests of its companies.
The proposal is part of wider US efforts to limit potential security risks involving foreign telecommunications equipment and networks.
