Punjab Health Card Service Suspended? What Patients Need to Know

Punjab’s Health Card programme has faced changes, with insurance coverage discontinued in government hospitals while listed private hospitals continue to provide covered treatment.
Punjab’s Health Card programme has undergone major changes, affecting how patients access free medical treatment in the province. Under the revised arrangement, the Universal Health Insurance programme was discontinued in public hospitals from June 30, 2025, while coverage continued at approved private hospitals.
The latest reports about the service have raised questions among patients who rely on the programme to manage hospital expenses.
Is the Health Card Completely Suspended?
No. According to the Punjab Health Initiative Management Company (PHIMC), the programme has not been completely stopped. Its official guidance states that treatment under the health insurance programme continues at approved private hospitals across Punjab.
However, the insurance-based facility is no longer available in government hospitals under the previous arrangement. Treatment in public hospitals is still provided through government-funded healthcare services and specific health initiatives.
Which Treatments Are Covered?
According to PHIMC, approved private hospitals provide covered services for several conditions, including:
Cancer treatment
Intensive care services, including ICU, CCU and NICU
Medical cases requiring hospital admission
Thalassemia treatment
Emergency services covered by the programme
Patients should confirm their eligibility, the hospital’s current status and the treatment covered before making arrangements.
Why Was the Policy Changed?
The Punjab government said the change was intended to avoid duplication between the insurance programme and other government-funded healthcare initiatives. These include specialised programmes for children’s heart surgery, dialysis and organ transplants.
The change means that patients may need to check which programme applies to their condition and whether their preferred hospital is included.
What Should Patients Do Now?
Patients planning treatment should contact an approved private hospital or the Punjab Health Initiative Management Company to confirm coverage before admission.
PHIMC lists the following helpline for assistance: 0800-07542.
The key point is that the Health Card programme has not been entirely discontinued, but its availability depends on the hospital and the type of treatment.
