ECP directs that the draft schedule for Punjab local government elections be submitted for approval and asks for returning officer lists within a week.
The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has decided to move forward immediately with local government elections in Punjab and in cantonment areas. It directed that the draft election schedule for Punjab be submitted for immediate approval.
Punjab
The ECP said the Punjab government has proposed holding the elections in April 2027, citing December fog, cold weather and Ramadan as reasons for postponement.
The commission noted that there had been an understanding to hold local government elections in Punjab between December 15 and January 15.
It directed the Punjab government to submit lists of District Returning Officers (DROs), Returning Officers (ROs) and Assistant Returning Officers (AROs) within one week, as these are needed for the electoral process.
Cantonment Areas
The commission decided to issue the schedule for local government elections in cantonment areas immediately and ordered that the election programme be submitted for approval without delay. The ECP said it had written to the Ministry of Defence and to the Prime Minister about the cantonment elections.
