Instagram is testing an AI feature that lets users write lyrics, pick a genre and generate a full song to share in Direct Messages.

Instagram is testing a new AI-powered feature that lets users create and share custom songs inside Direct Messages. Users write their own lyrics and choose a music genre, and Instagram then generates a complete song that can be sent to friends in a DM. The feature was first spotted by social media creator Jonah Manzano. Meta describes it as a fun engagement option, a way to add humour, creativity and personalisation to conversations. It is still in the testing phase, and Meta has not announced a launch date or confirmed whether it will roll out globally.

Could It Be Free?

Early indications suggest the tool could be part of Instagram's standard DM experience rather than limited to a paid subscription. That would set it apart from Snapchat's similar Chat-to-Song feature, introduced on September 21, which lets users pick a message and a music genre to generate an AI song but is available only to paying Lens+ subscribers.

Part of a Bigger AI Push in DMs

Earlier this year, Instagram introduced AI voice effects that let users change the style and tone of voice notes. In February 2025, it also expanded music sharing in DMs, allowing 30-second song previews to be sent in group chats and broadcast channels.

What Powers It Is Unclear

Meta has invested in generative AI for audio, including its AudioCraft research project, which includes MusicGen, a model that can generate music from text prompts. The company has not confirmed whether MusicGen or another model powers the new DM feature.
