Women in Karachi are assembling and manufacturing electric bikes and scooters at a woman-led company, after receiving free training in a male-dominated sector.

Girls in Karachi are not only riding e-bikes, they are also assembling and manufacturing them. At a company in the city, women are putting together electric bikes and scooters while skilfully using drilling machines, electrical appliances and other technical equipment. They say they have mastered the work through training and practical experience in a field traditionally dominated by men.

Their Stories

  • One worker, who has been in the field for a year and a half, took an electrician course and wanted to do something no woman had attempted before, so she chose e-bike manufacturing and assembly.

  • Another has worked there for almost a year after receiving full training and guidance. She says it took her two to three months to learn the work, and she paid no fees for the training. She is a mother of two, and her children were amazed to learn about her technical work.

  • A third previously worked at a pharmaceutical company before moving to scooter manufacturing. She says she feels immense joy seeing people ride e-bikes, knowing one of them might have been built by her hands.

A Woman-Led Project

The project itself is led by a woman. Its head says that if women can lead in other professions, there is no reason for them to lag behind in the automotive industry. With this vision, she decided to manufacture bikes herself and bring a large number of women into this workforce.
