Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb says digital financial innovation can lower business costs, expand financial access and support sustainable growth.

Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb has called for greater use of digital financial innovation to support Pakistan's economic growth, reduce the cost of doing business and bring more people into the formal economy.

Addressing a dialogue on digital assets and the future of banking on November 2, he said Pakistan was moving from macroeconomic stability towards sustainable growth. He identified fiscal discipline, stronger exports and increased private investment as important priorities.

Digital Assets Need Practical Economic Benefits

Aurangzeb said digital assets should become part of the financial system only when they deliver clear economic benefits and make business activities more efficient.

He highlighted technologies such as blockchain-based deposit tokens and discussed their potential role in improving financial services and cross-border payments.

Regulatory Framework and Security Measures

The minister said Pakistan had established a legal framework through the Virtual Assets Act 2026. He stressed that effective implementation would require capable supervision and coordination among relevant institutions.

He also urged banks to assess emerging technologies while maintaining strong risk management, regulatory compliance and cybersecurity safeguards.

Government Reviews Eurobond Tokenisation

Aurangzeb further revealed that the government was reviewing the possibility of tokenising Pakistan's existing Eurobond debt. The proposal is still under discussion and requires Cabinet approval before the government can move towards inviting formal proposals.

He said digital financial innovation should support real economic needs while protecting the stability and security of the financial system.
