Visa Reforms to Promote Tourism and Investment in Pakistan: PM Shehbaz

ISLAMABAD – In a significant move to bolster tourism, foreign investment, and trade, Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif announced on Sunday the introduction of substantial visa reforms aimed at facilitating foreign investors, business communities, and tourists. These reforms are part of the government’s broader strategy to enhance Pakistan’s economic ties globally and make the country a more attractive destination for international business and leisure.

In his statement, Prime Minister Shehbaz highlighted the transformative potential of these reforms, describing them as a highly positive development for the nation. One of the key initiatives under the new visa policy is the approval of visa-free entry for businessmen from Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries. This measure is expected to significantly boost investment and business opportunities from these regions, further strengthening Pakistan’s economic relationships with the GCC.

Moreover, the Prime Minister announced that businessmen, investors, and tourists from 126 countries will now be able to obtain visas within 24 hours through an efficient online system. This streamlined process not only facilitates easier access to Pakistan but also exempts traders and tourists from these countries from visa fees, reducing entry barriers for those looking to explore business or leisure opportunities in the country.

To promote religious tourism, especially among the Sikh community, special arrangements have been made for Sikh pilgrims holding passports from third countries. These pilgrims will be able to obtain visas on arrival, a gesture aimed at fostering cultural ties and encouraging religious tourism. Additionally, to expedite the entry process for all travelers, electronic gates will be installed at Karachi, Lahore, and Islamabad airports. These gates are designed to speed up the immigration process, ensuring a smooth and efficient experience for visitors.

A comprehensive monitoring system will oversee the implementation of the new visa regime. A dedicated dashboard at the Ministry of Interior will track various aspects of the policy, including visa-free entry, business visa lists, and tourist visas on arrival. This centralized monitoring will ensure the effectiveness and transparency of the new measures, facilitating their seamless execution.

Prime Minister Shehbaz commended the Ministry of Interior, along with other relevant ministries and institutions, for their diligent efforts in executing the new visa policies. He emphasized the importance of inter-ministerial cooperation in achieving the successful implementation of these reforms.

The introduction of these comprehensive visa reforms is anticipated to significantly enhance Pakistan’s appeal as a destination for international business and tourism. By lowering entry barriers and streamlining the visa process, the government aims to foster economic growth, create new opportunities for trade and investment, and strengthen global ties. This strategic move underscores Pakistan’s commitment to creating a more welcoming and business-friendly environment, ultimately contributing to the nation’s economic prosperity and international reputation.
