Trump Reignites Focus on Indo-Pak Conflict, Reiterates Bid for Nobel Peace Prize

US President Donald Trump once again spotlighted his efforts in resolving the Indo-Pak conflict, renewing his campaign for the Nobel Peace Prize. Speaking after a White House meeting with oil and gas industry leaders on January 9, 2026, Trump emphasized his role in ending the violent clashes between India and Pakistan in May 2025.

Trump’s Nobel Peace Prize Argument

During a media interaction, Trump highlighted:

  • The embarrassment of Norway, the home of the Nobel Committee, due to how the prize has been awarded historically.
  • His track record of settling eight major wars, some ongoing for decades before his intervention.
  • The recent ceasefire between India and Pakistan, which he claimed to have negotiated swiftly, averting a nuclear escalation.

He downplayed other recipients of the Nobel Peace Prize, notably questioning former President Barack Obama’s award, labeling him a “bad president” who did not merit the recognition.

Details of the Indo-Pak Conflict and Trump’s Role

Conflict between India and Pakistan intensified in April 2025 following a deadly terrorist attack targeting tourists in occupied Kashmir. Islamabad denied any involvement, but tensions escalated with both countries engaging in reciprocal military actions. Trump intervened diplomatically, culminating in a ceasefire declaration in May 2025.

Key points regarding the conflict and Trump’s involvement include:

  • Trump mentioned that eight jets were shot down during the hostilities, an increase from his previous claims of five and then seven.
  • He recalled his Oval Office meeting with Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif in September, during which Sharif publicly acknowledged Trump for saving an estimated ten million lives.
  • Trump praised Pakistan’s Chief of the Defence Forces, Field Marshal Asim Munir, calling him a “highly respected general” and “a great fighter.”

Responses from India and International Observers

India has publicly rejected Trump’s assertion that his intervention directly led to the ceasefire, disputing the narrative that trade negotiations or threats influenced their decision. The exact details regarding the jets shot down remain unclear as neither side has definitively specified losses.

Trump’s Broader Peace Efforts

Trump claimed that his peace efforts span eight significant conflicts, some of which lasted over three decades before his involvement. According to him, even Russian President Vladimir Putin acknowledged his unique success in halting conflicts that had been unresolved for years.

Summarizing his peace achievements, Trump stated:

“You should get the Nobel prize for every war you stopped. Every war was major. But I don’t care about that; I care about saving lives. I’ve saved tens of millions of lives.”

This statement reinforces his ongoing campaign to be recognized by the Nobel Committee for his diplomatic interventions.
