Trump Waives New Russia Sanctions; Moscow Hails Move
A Russian presidential envoy calls the US decision a “historic moment”, while the Kremlin has yet to react officially.

President Trump waives new sanctions and tariffs on Russia’s energy revenues; Putin’s envoy Kirill Dmitriev calls it a historic moment.
US President Donald Trump signed an executive order on Friday, October 16, waiving a sweeping package of US sanctions and tariffs targeting Russia’s energy revenues, two days before they were due to take effect. A Russian presidential envoy welcomed the decision on Saturday.
Moscow’s Reaction
Kirill Dmitriev, envoy for Russian President Vladimir Putin, said on social media that the suspension of the Lindsey Graham Act was “an important and truly historic moment”. He said the act would have caused serious damage first and foremost to the US economy and global markets. The Kremlin and Putin have not yet reacted officially.
The Sanctions Package
The act targeted Russia’s energy and defence sectors, as well as Putin and other senior officials. The West imposed major sanctions on Russia when the Ukraine war began in 2022.
Context
The decision came amid a clash between Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, which has fuelled speculation about Washington’s position nearly five years into the war. Putin, who appeared in military uniform on Friday, said Moscow intends to seize the rest of eastern Ukraine.
