Political stability crucial for economic stability, PM Shehbaz stresses in apex committee meeting

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has said that political stability is crucial for economic stability as he chaired the meeting of the National Apex Committee — summoned to overview the country’s law and order situation.

The committee was established in 2015 after the terrorist assault on the Army Public School to supervise the National Action Plan’s (NAP) implementation held in Islamabad as Pakistan battled a new wave of terrorism.

The civilian and military leadership were invited to the apex committee meeting, where it was planned to discuss and develop a plan to combat the wave of terrorism that was engulfing the country.

After visiting Kabul to discuss the rise in militant activity, including the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) assaults, Defence Minister Khawaja Asif and Director General of the Inter-Services Intelligence Lieutenant General Nadeem Anjum convened the meeting.

After a long gap, Islamabad made a high-level visit. It is understood that throughout the delegation’s time in Kabul, the TTP’s actions on Afghan soil, which are seriously endangering the peace in Pakistan, were the subject of in-depth discussions.

The Imran Khan-led Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) is holding its “Jail Bharo Tehreek (court arrest movement)” around the country, which also demands the attention of law enforcement officials, making the meeting important.

“Unfortunately, there is still a segment of society that wants to get things done on the streets,” the prime minister said, without naming the PTI — which was ousted from power in April and has been on the streets with intermittent intervals.
