Official Statements

PM Shahbaz Sharif has said, “There can be absolutely no ‘soft-pedalling’ of the May 9 riots.” These riots that broke out in support of the former Prime Minister Imran Khan supposedly turned very violent. Following Imran Khan’s arrest, his supporters took to the streets where they involved themselves in vandalism, and arson. Particularly targeting the General Headquarters, Pakistan. Corps Commander house. The PM further added, “not only were symbols of our national pride and honour attacked but the sanctity of our sacred homeland was also assaulted.”

“Let not the shadows of lies, hide the light of truth”.

The head of state was essentially reflecting on the events of May 9th, as today marks one year since then. The premier said, “It is [my] pledge to the holy land, the great martyrs, their families and the nation that May 9 never again”.

Conjointly, President Zardari issued a statement last night, reflecting on the events, “unfortunate incidents severely tarnished the country’s image, which only served the interest of Pakistan’s enemies.” He reemphasised the need to take action against those who were involved in these riots. The President very explicitly categorised this as “an attempt to challenge the writ of the state”. He further commented on the current scenario encouraging respectability of the democratic values.

“Current political situation demands that all political parties work towards promoting tolerance, democratic values, and political dialogue, and provide a clear direction to the nation”

Commemorating the victims

As per these officials, this day goes down in history as a “Dark Day” for Pakistan. Correspondingly a sequence of events is planned. These events are special functions held in solidarity with all the damages caused.

The information ministry will organize a special function which will be addressed by the PM shehbaz sharif. In this ceremony, various people will “pay befitting homage to our glorious martyrs and their families.”

Further, the Pakistan Broadcasting Corporation, collaboratively with ISPR will organize a special prayer ceremony at Radio Pakistan,  in Peshawar. Young children from multiple schools will also participate in the event.

Another ceremony is planned at the Pak-China friendship Centre in Islamabad.
