The LHC dismisses a petition seeking to cut Basant 2027 in Lahore from 10 days to one, as no official notification of the schedule was presented.

The Lahore High Court (LHC) has dismissed a petition seeking to reduce the Basant 2027 festival in Lahore from 10 days to one day, ruling that the case could not proceed without an official notification confirming the festival’s schedule. Justice Shahram Sarwar Chaudhry heard the petition filed by lawyer Shahid Islam, which raised concerns about public safety and disruption to daily life.

What the Court Said

  • The judge asked whether the petitioner’s counsel had the official notification under which Basant 2027 was scheduled for 10 days.

  • He observed that the court could not issue an order solely on the basis of documents available on a website, and asked how the court could examine a possible violation of fundamental rights without a notification establishing the proposed arrangement.

  • The court dismissed the petition as unnecessary and directed the petitioner to file it again with the relevant notification, so that the court could then ask the government about the proposed festival arrangements.

The Petition

The petition argued that standard operating procedures (SOPs) had not been set for the festival and asked the court to declare the announcement regarding Basant 2027 null and void and reduce the festival to a single day.
