In a significant diplomatic achievement, Pakistan has been elected as a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) with an overwhelming majority of 182 votes out of 193 in the General Assembly. This marks Pakistan’s eighth term on the Council, starting January 1, 2023, replacing Japan.

Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Munir Akram, expressed gratitude and emphasized the country’s commitment to promoting the purposes and principles of the UN Charter. As a member of the UNSC, Pakistan aims to:

  • Promote peace and security in South Asia
  • Uphold the principle of self-determination for the people of Palestine and Kashmir
  • Support normalization in Afghanistan
  • Advance equitable solutions to security challenges in Africa
  • Enhance the effectiveness of UN peacekeeping operations

Pakistan has a long history of contributing to UN peacekeeping missions, with over 4,000 troops and personnel currently deployed worldwide. The country’s election to the UNSC reflects its commitment to international peace and security.

The new members, including Denmark, Greece, Panama, and Somalia, will join the five permanent members (the United States, Russia, China, the United Kingdom, and France) and the five non-permanent members elected last year (Algeria, Guyana, South Korea, Sierra Leone, and Slovenia).

This election demonstrates the international community’s confidence in Pakistan’s ability to promote peace and security globally.
