Federal Minister for Communications Abdul Aleem Khan has directed the National Highway Authority (NHA) to ensure 100% safety features on highways and to prepare a feasibility study for a 123-kilometre model project from Mansehra to Naran. The minister was briefed on the Mansehra-Naran-Jhalakand-Chilas Highway during a meeting in Islamabad on Wednesday, and also directed the NHA to proceed with international tendering for the project. He said the route could help promote tourism and strengthen trade links with China, and stressed that there can be no higher priority than protecting citizens using the road network.
Safety and Facilities
Safety fences will be constructed as part of the expansion of the Pindi Bhattian-Faisalabad section of the M-4 motorway.
Rest areas and washrooms will be provided on both sides of newly constructed highways.
Newly completed projects are to be made safe and aesthetically improved.
Deadlines and Ongoing Work
The minister directed the NHA to complete the Muzaffargarh-Mianwali Highway within the next two months and to finish other ongoing projects as quickly as possible. The meeting also reviewed construction work on various sections of the Grand Trunk Road between Rawalpindi and Peshawar.
Green Belts Made Mandatory
The NHA decided to make green belts mandatory in the construction of new highways and motorways. The minister directed the authority to make horticulture a regular component of road infrastructure projects.
Guru Nanak Expressway
The meeting also discussed the proposed Guru Nanak Expressway, which Aleem Khan said would have special significance for the Sikh community. He directed officials to explore international investment, saying Sikh communities in Britain, Canada and the United States would be invited to take part in investment opportunities.
