US Secretary of State Antony Blinken is set to embark on his sixth visit to the Middle East since the onset of Israel’s invasion of Gaza. His mission is to facilitate discussions for a temporary ceasefire and the release of hostages.
During his trip, Blinken plans to engage with Saudi leaders in Jeddah and Egyptian leaders in Cairo. State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller stated that the focus will be on talks facilitated by Egypt and Qatar, aiming for an agreement and increased aid delivery to Gaza.
Negotiations for a ceasefire are ongoing in Qatar, although substantial progress has yet to be made despite weeks of deliberations between Israel and Hamas. The United States is eager to see an agreement that can alleviate the dire humanitarian situation in Gaza.
Blinken emphasized the importance of discussions regarding governance, security, and the reconstruction of Gaza in the aftermath of conflict. He expressed commitment to ongoing efforts with Arab partners since January, highlighting the pursuit of conversations that could contribute to lasting regional peace.
