Anwaar-ul-Haq, a former senator and leader of the Balochistan Awami Party (BAP), was sworn in as Pakistan’s eighth caretaker prime minister on Monday.

President Arif Alvi administered the oath of office to Kakar at the Aiwan-e-Sadar in the presence of outgoing Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and his former cabinet colleagues.

Shahbaz Sharif expressed his heartfelt congratulations to Caretaker Prime Minister Anwar Haq Kakar.

Anwaar-ul-Haq Kakar, the caretaker prime minister, will oversee the country until the general elections, which are scheduled for later this year.

“I have confidence in the caretaker prime minister’s ability to conduct free and fair elections,” outgoing Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said in his farewell address to the country late Sunday.

Kakar’s first responsibility will be to form a cabinet to govern the country as it prepares for a months-long election campaign.

The National Assembly was dissolved last week, and elections are scheduled to occur within 90 days, according to the constitution.

For months, there has been anticipation that the vote might be postponed.

After the latest census was issued earlier this month, the election commission needed time to redesign constituency boundaries in order to hold elections based on the new population count.

On Saturday, the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) announced Senator Anwarul Haq Kakar as Pakistan’s caretaker prime minister.

PM Shehbaz and opposition leader Raja Riaz had submitted President Alvi an advisory regarding Kakar’s appointment as caretaker prime minister, which was signed by the president.
