A teardown of Apple's iPhone Duo points to two possible causes of screen cracks, raising concerns about hinge design, durability, and repair costs.

Apple's new foldable iPhone Duo is facing questions about screen durability after some users reported cracks and bright lines appearing on the inner display. A recent teardown has identified two possible explanations for the damage, both linked to the phone's complex hinge mechanism.

The findings provide new clues about why some screens may be failing, although the exact cause has not yet been confirmed.

What Could Be Causing the Screen Damage?

An investigation by repair specialists identified two possible problems inside the phone's hinge.

The first possibility involves a central support bar that may not move down far enough when the phone closes. If this happens, the folding display could press against the support, creating extra pressure in a sensitive area.

The second possibility involves a curved hinge rail that may not retract properly during folding. If the component remains raised, it could place additional stress on the screen.

Both explanations remain theories and require further testing.

Why Are Users Reporting Cracks?

Some owners have reported hearing a popping or crunching sound before noticing bright lines or other display problems. In certain cases, the damage reportedly appeared within hours of purchasing the device.

The affected areas appear to be concentrated near part of the hinge where several internal components meet. This has led investigators to examine whether pressure, mechanical movement, or a component problem could be responsible.

However, early reports alone cannot establish how frequently these failures occur or whether all damaged devices share the same cause.

How Much Could Screen Repairs Cost?

Repairing the inner display could be expensive. Reports indicate that an out-of-warranty replacement may cost around $999, making screen damage a significant concern for owners.

The teardown also found some positive repair features, including batteries that can be removed using electrically releasable adhesive and an outer display that can be removed without breaking.

Despite these features, repairing the inner screen and hinge remains complicated because several components must be removed to reach the damaged parts.

What Should iPhone Duo Owners Do?

Owners should pay attention to unusual hinge noises, sudden changes in folding resistance, or unexpected lines on the display. If the hinge begins to feel stuck or makes an unfamiliar sound, they should avoid forcing it and seek professional inspection.

The findings do not prove that every iPhone Duo has a design problem. Further testing and additional evidence will be needed to determine the cause of the reported failures.
