Pakistan Reach Tri-Series Final, but Batting Coach Says Team Must Improve

Pakistan have secured a place in the final of the ongoing ODI tri-series involving England and Sri Lanka. However, the team’s batting performance remains an area for improvement as the coaching staff prepare for the next stage of the competition.

Pakistan qualified for the final after winning their first three matches. Despite these results, the team has experienced difficult moments with the bat, including a major collapse during their one-wicket victory over England in Lahore on October 25.

Batting Consistency Remains a Priority

Pakistan’s batting coach, Michael Smith, has previously stressed the importance of building depth across the batting order rather than depending on only a few players.

The coaching approach focuses on helping batters adapt to different pitches, bowling attacks and match situations. This is particularly important as Pakistan prepare for a busy period of ODI cricket ahead of the 2027 Cricket World Cup.

The team needs contributions from players throughout the batting order to build competitive totals and chase targets with greater control.

Shadab Khan's Match-Winning Performance

Pakistan’s recent victory over England highlighted both the team’s ability to recover under pressure and the difficulties it faced during the chase.

Chasing 242 runs, Pakistan slipped to 154 for nine before Shadab Khan scored an unbeaten 113. He shared an unbroken 89-run partnership with Haris Rauf, helping Pakistan reach the target with one wicket remaining.

The performance secured Pakistan’s place in the final, but the collapse before Shadab’s innings also showed why the team needs more consistent contributions from its specialist batters.

Focus Turns to the Final

Pakistan are scheduled to face Sri Lanka in their remaining league match before the final, which is set for October 31 in Lahore.

The coaching staff will have an opportunity to assess the batting combination, improve decision-making and prepare players for different match conditions.

With the 2027 World Cup approaching, building a reliable batting lineup will remain an important goal. Pakistan’s recent results have secured a place in the final, but consistent performances across the batting order will be essential for the team’s longer-term plans.
