Sara Gill: first trans doctor, Nisha Rao: first trans lawyer

Sara Gill: first trans doctor, Nisha Rao: first trans lawyer

Dr. Sara Gill is the First Transgender Doctor in Pakistan and Nisha Rao is the first trans lawyer in Pakistan.

Karachi’s Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC) offered a house job to “Pakistan’s first trans doctor” while Nisha Roa is a practicing lawyer in Karachi.

“Today, Dr Sara Gill met JPMC Executive Director Professor Shahid Rasool and received her house job order,” Sindh Chief Minister House statement read.

Last month, Dr Gill, who is also a renowned transgender activist, made waves on social media after graduating with a Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery (MBBS) from Jinnah Medical and Dental College — an affiliate of Karachi University. 

Several Twitter users had congratulated Dr Gill on achieving this feat despite the social stigma attached to the transgender community and the deep-rooted discrimination they face in Pakistan.

On the other hand, Nisha Rao is now the Pakistan’s first transgender lawyer offers to fight free cases for all rape victims.

Nisha Rao went from begging for money on the streets of Karachi, Pakistan’s largest city, to becoming the country’s first transgender lawyer. Today, she seeks to use the law to make Pakistan a more equitable place for transgender people.

“I’m very proud to be Pakistan’s first transgender lawyer. My community gave me a lot of courage,” she said.

Moreover, Lawyer Nisha Rao grew up in Lahore.

Furthermore, She said the both her and her family knew from a young age that she was transgender.

Pakistan has made progress on transgender rights in recent years.

But it is still challenging for christain transgenders in the majority-Muslim country. still comes with challenges. One of these challenges include end of their social life.

In 2017, the government carried out population census for transgender people were in Pakistan for the first time. They officially number was 10,418 out of over 200 million people. On the other hand, the advocacy groups say the transgender population is likely far greater. They are estimated around 300,000 to 2 million.
