PTI Chief Imran Khan Nominates Barrister Gohar Khan for Chairman Role

In a significant political move, Imran Khan, the Chief of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), has decided not to seek re-election as the party’s chairman, citing legal impediments. Senior Vice-President Sher Afzal Marwat confirmed on Tuesday that Barrister Gohar Khan would be the nominated candidate for the chairmanship, marking the end of Imran Khan’s long-standing tenure at the helm of the party.

The decision comes as Imran Khan is currently incarcerated in Rawalpindi’s Adiala jail, facing legal challenges, particularly his disqualification as a parliamentarian for five years in the Toshakhana case. The case found him involved in “corrupt practices by hiding the benefits he accrued from the national exchequer willfully and intentionally.”

While party leaders had earlier indicated that Imran Khan would not contest the intra-party elections, the official announcement of Barrister Gohar Khan as the nominee has now been made. This move aligns with the PTI’s Core Committee’s formal approval to conduct intra-party polls within the 20-day timeframe mandated by the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP), under the risk of losing the party’s bat symbol.

The PTI’s assertion that there were no plans for Imran Khan to step down was met with skepticism, but Marwat’s confirmation has clarified the party’s stance. The development assumes significance as the country approaches general elections scheduled for February 8, 2024. The PTI faces the challenge of securing votes without Imran Khan at the forefront, considering his influential role in the party.

Who is Barrister Gohar Khan

Barrister Gohar Khan, the chosen nominee, brings a wealth of legal expertise to the table. An advocate of the Supreme Court of Pakistan, he has appeared in various high courts and holds a law degree from Wolverhampton University, UK, with an LLM from Washington School of Law, USA. With over 50 reported judgments in his active law practice, covering areas such as taxation, commercial, corporate, arbitration, banking, and election law, Gohar Khan is well-versed in diverse legal domains.

His experience extends to civil and criminal trials, and he has had the honor of appearing before the Supreme Judicial Council, Field General Court Martial, and its Court of Appeal. Notably, his clientele includes both public and private companies, along with significant individuals, including Imran Khan.

Gohar Khan’s political journey saw him as a member of the Pakistan People’s Party Parliamentarian. He contested the National Assembly elections in 2008 but faced defeat. Subsequently, he joined the PTI in July 2022, adding a dynamic element to the party leadership.

As the PTI navigates this leadership transition, the upcoming intra-party elections will play a crucial role in shaping the party’s future trajectory, particularly as it strives to maintain its political standing in the run-up to the general elections.
