A tanker carrying 40,000 tonnes of Russian diesel, the first under a Trump-Putin deal, is bound for New York and expected to arrive on November 7.

The first Russian diesel bound for the United States under a surprise agreement between Moscow and US President Donald Trump is aboard a tanker heading for New York, ship-tracking data showed on Friday, October 23.

The Cargo

  • The Malta-flagged tanker Agioi Fanendes loaded 40,000 metric tons of ultra-low sulphur diesel at Primorsk on October 22, according to LSEG shipping data, and is expected to reach the US on November 7.

  • The buyer and seller have not been identified.

  • It will be the first such cargo imported by the US since the 2022 ban on Russian oil and petroleum products.

The Deal

Trump announced the deal on October 9 as part of efforts to bring down soaring diesel prices ahead of the November 3 US mid-term elections. He said Russia would immediately export 300,000 metric tons, followed by 500,000 tons in November and 1 million tons soon after. The agreement involved Russia lifting its own ban on diesel exports. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov confirmed a first tanker had sailed and said further shipments would continue at a steady pace, though he did not say whether it was bound for the US.

Wider Exports

Since the EU’s embargo in 2023, Russia has sold diesel mainly to Türkiye, Brazil and African countries. Shipping data this week showed cargoes resuming voyages to those destinations. Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak said Russia could return to its usual 3-3.5 million tons a month by year-end.
