IHC: Pension Is a Legal Right, Orders Immediate Payment
Justice Shahrukh Arjumand directs the Finance Ministry and relevant authorities to release a retiree’s pension and retirement benefits without delay.

Islamabad High Court rules pension is a legal and constitutional right, not charity, and orders immediate payment of benefits to a retiree
The Islamabad High Court (IHC) has ordered the immediate payment of pension and retirement benefits to an employee who completed 30 years of service. In a written judgement on the retired employee’s petition, Justice Shahrukh Arjumand said pension is not charity, a concession or a gift, but a legal and constitutional right.
The Order
The court directed the Ministry of Finance and all relevant authorities to immediately release the petitioner’s pension and disburse all retirement benefits due to him, without further delay.
Court’s Observations
Pension is deferred compensation for the work done during an employee’s service, earned through years of labour.
It provides financial security to retired employees in old age.
Retirement benefits are not discretionary payments but an entitlement linked to the service rendered, and authorities must fulfil their obligations to those who have completed their service.
