WhatsApp has announced significant changes to its terms of service, set to take effect on January 15, 2026, that will ban all third-party AI chatbots from its platform. This means users will no longer be able to use popular AI assistants such as ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, or similar tools within both personal and WhatsApp Business accounts.

The policy change comes as part of Meta’s effort to consolidate AI experiences within its ecosystem and ensure that all AI-powered interactions on WhatsApp are secure, reliable, and controlled through Meta’s own AI services. Users who currently rely on third-party chatbots for automation, productivity, or enhanced conversations will need to transition to Meta-supported AI tools before the deadline.

For businesses, the change has significant implications. Many WhatsApp Business accounts have used AI chatbots to manage customer service, automate responses, and streamline operations. After January 15, these integrations will no longer function, requiring companies to adopt Meta-approved AI solutions or adjust their workflows.

The ban specifically targets general-purpose AI chatbots. Bots used for task-specific purposes, such as booking confirmations, notifications, or workflow automation, may still be allowed if they don’t operate as broad conversational AI.

This move highlights Meta’s strategy to centralize AI functionality, reduce reliance on external AI providers, and maintain a consistent user experience across WhatsApp. Users and businesses are advised to plan ahead for this transition to avoid disruptions in AI-assisted messaging.
