Punjab on Alert as Monsoon Rains Begin. The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) of Punjab forecasts a substantial 30% increase in monsoon rains this year as the monsoon season begins across the province. PDMA Director General Irfan Ali Kathia announced on Monday that monsoon rains are predicted to start in Punjab from today.

According to the PDMA’s expectations, rainfall will range from 15 to 50 millimeters in the first week of July, followed by 25 to 35 millimeters in the second week. The third week is expected to see 15 to 25 millimeters of rain in Upper and South Punjab. The fourth week of July could see rainfall between 50 to 70 millimeters.

Heavy thunderstorms and the risk of urban flooding and flash floods in hill torrents, particularly in Southern Punjab, are anticipated. Following directives from Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif, all relevant departments have been alerted to prepare for the monsoon season.

PDMA DG Kathia has urged district administrations to ensure comprehensive safety measures during the monsoon, including the cleaning of drains and complete drainage arrangements as soon as possible. He emphasized that with mutual cooperation and timely preparations, the damage from natural disasters can be mitigated.

The director general also urged the public to adopt safety measures during the rainy season, such as keeping children away from waterlogged areas, electrical wires, and poles. He stressed that the safety of citizens’ lives and property is the highest priority.

CM Maryam Nawaz has issued strict instructions, emphasizing that there is no tolerance for negligence or irresponsibility in ensuring the safety and preparedness of the province during the upcoming monsoon season.
