Power tariff Expected to Rise by Rs3.41 per Unit
Share on FacebookShare on TwitterLinkedinWhatsapp

The power tariff is likely to increase by Rs 3.41 per unit due to the monthly fuel adjustment (MFA).

The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) is scheduled to hear an application from the Central Power Purchasing Agency (CPPA) seeking a Rs 3.41 per unit hike in the power tariff. This application cites an increase in the monthly fuel adjustment for May.

The CPPA reported that 12.26 billion units of electricity were generated last month, with a production cost of Rs 9.12 per unit. If NEPRA approves the application, the tariff hike will add to the financial burden of consumers already struggling with high electricity prices.

In a recent development, NEPRA approved a Rs 5.72 per unit increase in the power tariff following the announcement of the Budget 2024-25, further burdening inflation-hit citizens. NEPRA stated that the average electricity tariff will rise to Rs 35.50 per unit from the current Rs 29.78.

Previously, the basic electricity tariff was increased to Rs 7.50 per unit for the current financial year, up from Rs 7.91 per unit in the last fiscal year. The new surge in the electricity tariff is set to be implemented from July 1.
