PM vows to uproot terrorism after ISI brigadier’s martyrdom

After a senior army commander was killed in South Waziristan during a gunfight, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif declared that “terrorism will be uprooted” from the country “as it is against the very idea of Pakistan”.

“Deeply saddened by the martyrdom of Brigadier Mustafa Burki and other soldiers. Our brave sons of the soil have laid down their lives protecting the country from the enemy forces,” tweeted PM Shehbaz while condoling with the bereaved families.

Brigadier Barki of Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) died after a fierce firefight with terrorists near to the Angoor Adda area of South Waziristan, according to a statement released by Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) a day earlier.

Seven more people were hurt during the gunfight, according to information provided to the media by the military.

Two of those injured, according to the military’s media wing, are gravely hurt.

The officer gave his life to preserve the motherland’s peace, according to the ISPR. “Brigadier Barki and his team put up a valiant resistance against the terrorists during the encounter,” it said.

This is the second time this year that terrorists have martyred a senior ISI official.

Naveed Sadiq and Nasir Hussain, the director and inspector, respectively, of the ISI’s Counter-Terrorism Wing, died in an attack in Khanewal in January of this year.

Sadiq was killed while on a mission to destroy the network of a prohibited organization operating out of Afghanistan.

Both the Hilal-e-Shujaat and Tamgha-e-Shujaat were given to the authorities after their deaths.
