PCB Faces Backlash from Fans for Imposing Fine on Azam Khan for Supporting Palestine

Cricket fans are expressing their displeasure with the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) on social media after batter Azam Khan was fined for displaying the Palestinian flag on his bat during the ongoing National T20 Cup.

The wicketkeeper-batsman, representing Karachi Whites, has been directed to forfeit 50% of his match fees for violating clothing and equipment regulations, specifically displaying an unapproved logo with political messaging.

Azam, known for his flamboyant style, scored 35 against Lahore Blues in the match held in Karachi. After the game, match referee Mohammad Javed informed the batter about the fine. Sources confirm that Azam had the same sticker on his bat in two previous National T20 Cup games, but he received no warning before Sunday’s match.

The ICC regulation for clothing and equipment prohibits players from displaying messages related to political, religious, or racial activities. While Azam claimed all his bats had the same stickers, the PCB, being an ICC signatory, enforced the penalty.

Notably, in October, during the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023, several Pakistani players expressed support for Palestinians, prompting questions from Indian fans and cricket experts. The PCB defended the players’ actions, stating it was a personal decision.

The recent decision to penalize Azam has triggered anger among netizens, who criticize the cricket authorities. It’s essential to clarify that the ICC code pertains to on-field activities, and actions off the field fall outside its scope.

Here’s how the social media users have reacted:

When your own board is imposing fines for showing support for Palestine and you expect the enemy to show respect. Hypocrites everywhere #ShameOnPCB pic.twitter.com/NLvyY2xdxu

Disappointed with @TheRealPCB's decision penalizing #AzamKhan for a simple act of solidarity by putting a Palestine sticker on his bat. Pakistan claims to be an Islamic Republic, yet stifles its own players from expressing support for Palestine? Where's the justice?#ShameOnPCB pic.twitter.com/0eiv4dvdWF
