Mustafa Kamal, leader of MQM-Pakistan and Federal Minister for Health, has reiterated his call for the federal government to assume control over Karachi. Speaking to the media, he emphasized the need for immediate federal intervention in the administration of the city.
Call for Federal Control of Karachi
Kamal argued that Karachi, being a major city, should not be managed by what he described as an incompetent provincial government. He urged that Karachi be integrated directly into the federation without delay, noting that the federal government has the constitutional authority to take control under Article 148.
Concerns Over Negligence and Governance
Referring to the recent Gul Plaza incident, Kamal highlighted that lives were lost due to negligence. He condemned the provincial government’s poor performance, labeling it an act of oppression. Kamal stated, “If calling out cruelty is met with such reactions, then I reaffirm that Karachi must be freed from their control.” He added that the Sindh government’s response has only strengthened MQM’s position.
Security Withdrawal and Political Implications
When asked about the withdrawal of security from MQM-P leaders, Kamal confirmed that his own security detail had been removed. He dismissed the move as ineffective, saying it would not intimidate him or silence the party’s voice. Kamal criticized the Sindh government for providing security to nationalist groups allegedly undermining Pakistan’s unity.
Engagement with Federal Authorities
Kamal mentioned that a formal letter has been sent to the federal government regarding the situation, and the matter is being discussed in cabinet meetings. He emphasized that their demands are neither undemocratic nor unconstitutional, stressing the urgent need to address Karachi’s challenges while contrasting the city’s struggles with global advancements.
