In a move aimed at tackling the issue of smog, the Lahore High Court (LHC) issued an order on Wednesday for officials to fine vehicles for improper parking and individuals cleaning their vehicles at home in the province capital.

The prevalence of smog in cities during the early days of winter has been primarily attributed to emissions from vehicles, industrial activities, and the burning of crop residues, resulting in respiratory problems and other health issues.

Punjab has been severely affected by such weather conditions in recent years during the initial phase of winter.

Justice Shahid Karim delivered a written verdict in response to petitions seeking the court’s intervention to combat the smog threat. In the written order, the LHC directed authorities to levy a fine of Rs5,000 on individuals washing their vehicles at home and a similar fine for incorrect parking within the city. The order also mandated the authorities to issue tickets to motorcyclists not wearing helmets.

The Lahore Development Authority has been instructed not to initiate any development projects in the city without prior clearance from the court and the Environmental Department.

During the previous hearing, the high court expressed its dissatisfaction with the Lahore Development Authority, questioning the urgency of the caretaker Punjab government in pursuing development projects, suggesting it could potentially wait for four months. Justice Karim remarked, “Why is the caretaker Punjab government rushing with development projects?”
