PM Shehbaz Backs China's Global Development Initiative, Calls for Peace

PM Shehbaz Sharif reaffirmed Pakistan's full support for China's Global Development Initiative (GDI), calling it a vital platform for cooperation among Global South and developing nations amid widening financial gaps, climate disasters, and rising living costs. Addressing a high-level GDI meeting hosted by China's vice president, he said progress toward the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals remains insufficient, with just four years left to the deadline.

Praise for Xi Jinping's Initiative

Shehbaz said President Xi Jinping introduced the GDI during the Covid-19 pandemic and that it has since translated into "tangible and practical benefits for the developing world." He noted CPEC is now entering its second phase, underscoring the importance of Pakistan-China cooperation in development and connectivity.

"War and Peace Are Choices"

Addressing the UN General Assembly separately, Shehbaz said Pakistan has chosen peace and dialogue over confrontation, stating: "We live at a dangerous moment. But our future is certainly not predetermined." He said resolving conflicts in the Middle East, Kashmir, and Palestine is crucial to restoring global trust.

Regional Issues Raised

His UNGA address covered human rights concerns in Palestine and Indian-administered Jammu and Kashmir, India's unilateral suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty, and the rising threat of terrorism emanating from Afghanistan, alongside climate change and developing countries' debt burdens.
