Italy Names Senior Israeli Officials in Flotilla Probe
Rome prosecutors expand an investigation into the treatment of Gaza flotilla activists; being placed under investigation does not imply guilt.

Rome prosecutors place Israel’s defence minister and senior officials under investigation over treatment of Gaza flotilla activists; this does not imply guilt.
Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz and senior military, police and prison officials have been placed under investigation in Italy over the treatment of Gaza flotilla activists, Italian prosecutors said on Friday, October 16. The move expands an investigation that had focused on National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir.
The Case
Rome prosecutors are investigating suspected torture, kidnapping, personal injury, robbery and damage during interceptions of small boat fleets bound for Gaza in 2025 and 2026.
The probe began after complaints from 50 Italian citizens detained after two Global Sumud Flotilla missions, in September-October 2025 and April-May 2026.
Besides Katz and Ben-Gvir, prosecutors named 12 senior Israeli military, police and prison officials as suspects, including military chief Eyal Zamir.
Prosecutors said they sent Israel a request for judicial assistance in June and did not say whether it had responded. They also held talks at the EU judicial cooperation agency Eurojust, as similar investigations are under way in other European countries.
Responses and Legal Context
Katz and Zamir did not immediately respond to requests for comment. Ben-Gvir dismissed news of his investigation in June. Under Italian law, crimes committed abroad against Italian citizens can be prosecuted in Rome. Being placed under investigation does not imply guilt or automatically lead to a trial, though prosecutors could request one if charges are warranted.
Flotilla organisers say they aimed to break the blockade of Gaza by delivering humanitarian aid. Israel says its naval blockade is lawful.
