Pakistan raises petrol to Rs384.34 and diesel to Rs415.83 per litre for September 16 as OGRA shifts to a fully daily pricing mechanism.

The government has raised petrol by Rs4.10 to Rs384.34 per litre and high-speed diesel by Rs6.41 to Rs415.83 per litre, effective September 16, citing continued fluctuations in international oil markets. OGRA has now begun publishing daily petroleum prices on its website, calculated using a seven-day average of international market prices, allowing the regulator to announce rates without prior PM or federal government approval — though Friday's rate stays unchanged through the weekend.

Why the System Changed

Pakistan moved from a weekly to a fully daily pricing mechanism amid Middle East volatility, after the conflict that began February 28 saw Iran shut the Strait of Hormuz — the route for roughly a fifth of global energy supplies. Tensions have worsened since a June truce between Iran and the US collapsed.

New Import Rules Too

For fiscal year 2026-27, all high-speed diesel imports will now go exclusively through PSO, while oil marketing companies can import petrol according to their market share. Companies that miss import obligations face a nine-month ban on fresh import permissions.

The Bottom Line

With daily pricing now fully in effect and diesel closing in on Rs416, expect these numbers to keep moving — sometimes day by day — as long as Gulf tensions keep global oil markets unsettled.
