Recent iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro leaks have revealed two very different iPhones, with Apple determined to widen the gap between Pro and non-Pro models. The news has split opinions and now conflicting information about their release has done the same.

In recent weeks, reports have claimed that there will or will not be a delay in the release of some iPhone 14 models. Now one of the most respected industry insiders has added another layer of confusion to the picture.

Apple will give the iPhone 14 Pro an eye-catching redesign this year, but now a new leak has revealed an even more significant design change is coming next.

With pressure mounting on Apple following the EU’s decision to force all smartphone manufacturers to adopt USB-C by Fall 2024, LeaksApplePro shows the iPhone maker will jump before it is pushed.

According to the leaker, the iPhone 15 range will split port release in 2023, followed by the full-range switching to USB-C for the iPhone 16 lineup in 2024. This is ahead of the EU deadline. It is interesting to note that LeaksApplePro points out that Apple may even go a step further with iPhone 16 Pro models potentially having a port-less (MagSafe-only) design.

The decision of whether or not to use MagSafe for charging would depend on the maturity of the MagSafe system. Introduced in 2020, MagSafe currently delivers 15W of power, which is much lower than the USB-C fast charging speeds of 40-60W that are common among Android phones. 240W of power has been unveiled for USB-C, making MagSafe a less attractive option for many users.

That said, Apple could get away with a portless iPhone because the EU legislation only extends to “consumer electronics using wired charging”.
