Former Pakistan captain Shoaib Malik has once again offered his advice to current skipper Babar Azam, suggesting that he step down from the captaincy and focus on his role as a player within the team.
Malik shared his thoughts during a recent appearance on a private TV show, emphasizing that his opinion isn’t solely influenced by Pakistan’s recent loss to India on October 14.
Malik clarified his stance by stating, “I have a sincere opinion for Babar, which I have shared before, that Babar should leave the captaincy.” He emphasized that his recommendation is based on his belief that the 29-year-old captain performs at his best when not burdened with the responsibilities of leadership.
According to Malik, his advice is rooted in careful consideration and analysis. He mentioned that he has done some research and feels that Babar, as a cricketer, has the potential to deliver outstanding performances for himself and the team without the added pressures of captaincy.
Malik also highlighted the importance of separating leadership and batting skills, stating that “no cricketer should mix his leadership with his batting skills because they are two different things.” He expressed concerns about Babar’s leadership style, suggesting that it lacks innovative thinking and that there hasn’t been significant improvement during his tenure as captain.
In addition to discussing Babar’s captaincy, Malik also offered insights into the team’s performance. He observed that when matches go according to plan, the Pakistani players are assertive and aggressive, but when situations deviate from the intended strategy, they struggle to adapt.
Malik recommended that Babar should hold a meeting with the players to address these issues and collectively work on improving their performance as a team.
