The United Nations Security Council has passed its first resolution since the beginning of the Israel-Hamas conflict, urging “urgent and extended humanitarian pauses” in Gaza to address the worsening situation for Palestinian civilians.
Introduced by Malta, the resolution received support from 12 out of 15 council members, while Britain, Russia, and the United States abstained.
The main point of contention in the council has been whether to call for a humanitarian pause or a formal ceasefire, with the U.S. supporting pauses and Russia advocating for a ceasefire.
