US President Donald Trump has again urged countries whose economies rely heavily on the Strait of Hormuz to send warships to help secure the region.
Speaking on the issue, Trump said the United States receives less than one percent of its oil through the strait, while several other nations depend on it far more. He pointed out that Japan imports about 95 percent of its oil through the route, China around 90 percent, and South Korea about 35 percent, while many European countries also rely significantly on the passage.
Trump stressed that because these countries depend more on the strait for energy supplies, they should take a greater role in protecting it. “We get less than one percent of our oil from the Strait, while other countries rely on it much more,” he said, adding that the US wants those nations to help ensure the security of the waterway.
He also noted that several countries had indicated they were willing to participate. According to Trump, some nations are very enthusiastic about the proposal, while others remain hesitant.
