Tehran has issued warnings to neighboring countries hosting U.S. troops, signaling that it would retaliate against American military bases if the United States intervenes in the ongoing protests within Iran. This development comes amid escalating tensions and increased rhetoric from Washington.
Warnings to Regional Hosts of U.S. Forces
A senior Iranian official informed that Tehran has communicated to regional allies, including Saudi Arabia, the UAE, and Turkey, that U.S. bases located in these countries could become targets if the U.S. takes military action against Iran. The official emphasized that Iran has urged these countries to prevent any attacks originating from Washington.
U.S. Military Precautions at Al Udeid Air Base
Three diplomats reported that some U.S. personnel at the Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar were advised to leave by Wednesday evening. However, this was described as a “posture change” rather than an ordered evacuation. Unlike last year’s missile attack on the base, there have been no signs of a large-scale troop withdrawal to nearby facilities such as a soccer stadium or shopping mall.
U.S. Stance and Statements
President Donald Trump has publicly threatened intervention in support of protesters amid reports of a severe crackdown in Iran. Human rights groups estimate that approximately 2,600 people have died during recent protests, which represent one of the largest movements against clerical rule in the country’s history.
In a recent interview, Trump promised “very strong action” should Iran execute protesters and encouraged Iranians to continue their demonstrations, stating, “help is on the way.” However, he declined to clarify the nature of this assistance.
Diplomatic Developments and Regional Contacts
Iranian state media noted ongoing communications between Iranian officials and counterparts in Qatar, the UAE, and Turkey. Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi reportedly spoke with the Emirati and Turkish foreign ministers, emphasizing Iran’s determination to maintain sovereignty and security against foreign interference.
Meanwhile, direct contacts between Iran’s Foreign Minister and the U.S. Special Envoy have been suspended amid rising tensions.
Security Situation Inside Iran
Iranian authorities continue to suppress protests, with reports of over 18,000 arrests and thousands of deaths. The Iranian judiciary has called for swift action against those accused of violent acts during the unrest. Pro-government rallies have also taken place, demonstrating support for the clerical establishment.
The flow of information from inside Iran remains limited due to internet blackouts, complicating independent verification of events.
Regional and International Context
The United States maintains a significant military presence in the region, including the Central Command headquarters in Qatar and the U.S. Navy’s Fifth Fleet in Bahrain. An Israeli official indicated that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s security cabinet has been briefed on the potential for regime collapse or U.S. intervention in Iran.
Additional U.S. Measures
In response to the situation, the U.S. announced a 25% tariff on imports from countries conducting business with Iran. The State Department has also urged American citizens to leave Iran promptly.
