Matthew Breetzke: The Record-Breaking Batter Powering South Africa's ODI Rise

Matthew Paul Breetzke, born November 3, 1998, in Port Elizabeth, has emerged as one of South Africa's most reliable ODI batters since his debut in February 2025. A right-handed top-order batter, he currently plays domestic cricket for the Warriors and represents Northamptonshire in England.

A Debut That Broke a 47-Year-Old Record

Breetzke's ODI debut came against New Zealand at Lahore's Gaddafi Stadium during the 2025 Pakistan Tri-Nation Series. He scored 150 runs in that innings — the highest score by any player on ODI debut, surpassing West Indies' Desmond Haynes, who had held the record at 148 since 1978. South Africa captain Temba Bavuma praised him afterward, noting he was one of few young players competing across all three formats.

A Consistent Force Since

Since that debut, Breetzke has continued delivering under pressure. In England earlier this year, he returned from a hamstring injury to score 85 as South Africa beat England by five runs to seal a bilateral ODI series victory — South Africa's first in England since 1998. His overall ODI numbers stand at 706 runs from 12 matches at an average of 64.18.

Current Form Against Australia

In the ongoing South Africa vs Australia series, Breetzke has continued his strong run, anchoring innings with composed, aggressive batting at the top of the order.

The Journey Before International Cricket

Breetzke's pedigree traces back to South Africa's Under-19 setup, where he scored over 1,000 runs in 25 youth ODIs and was the second-highest run-scorer at the 2018 Under-19 World Cup. He was the top run-scorer in CSA's four-day first-class competition in 2022-23, later making his T20I debut against Australia in September 2023 and his Test debut against Bangladesh in October 2024.
