A Shalimar Express train derailed on January 31, 2025, near the Shahdara flyover close to Sheikhupura while en route from Lahore to Karachi. The derailment occurred when three of the train’s bogies went off the tracks, halting the journey and prompting the suspension of train services temporarily.

All Passengers Safe

A spokesperson for Pakistan Railways confirmed that all passengers aboard the Shalimar Express were safe despite the derailment. The incident triggered swift rescue operations, and all passengers were safely transferred to Shahdara Railway Station.

The train, which had departed from Lahore at 7:30 AM, was carrying several coaches, and the railway authorities quickly worked to arrange alternative travel routes for the affected passengers.

Investigation Ordered

Following the derailment, CEO of Railways Aamir Ali Baloch ordered a thorough investigation into the cause of the incident. A relief train was dispatched to clear the railway tracks and restore normal operations as quickly as possible.

Alternative Travel Arrangements

For the stranded passengers, alternate routes were quickly established:

  • Passengers aboard seven coaches were rerouted via Sheikhupura to Wazirabad and Sangla Hill.
  • The remaining eight coaches were rerouted to Sahiwal and Khanewal via Lahore.

Additionally, another Shalimar Express train was prepared at Khanewal to resume the Karachi-bound journey, while the Karakoram Express, coming from Karachi, was stopped at Sheikhupura and diverted to Lahore via Sangla Hill and Wazirabad.

Railway Operations Affected

The incident caused a temporary disruption in train services, with several routes affected:

  • Trains from Karachi to Lahore were diverted via Wazirabad to avoid the affected area.
  • A relief train was sent from Lahore to help clear the tracks and transfer passengers back to Lahore Railway Station for further travel.

In response to the incident, a passenger train coming from Jaranwala was halted at Missan Kalar Railway Station to prevent further disruptions.

Conclusion

While the derailment at Shahdara flyover caused significant delays, no casualties were reported, and all passengers were safely relocated. The railway authorities are continuing to investigate the incident and have already begun restoring services and providing alternate travel routes for affected travelers.
