RIYADH: In a major update for Muslims worldwide, Saudi Arabia has officially confirmed that Eid ul Fitr 2026 will be celebrated on Friday, March 20, after the Shawwal moon was not sighted.
The kingdom’s moon-sighting committee met after Maghrib prayers to observe the crescent but did not receive any verified reports of moon sighting. Following this, the Royal Court issued an official announcement declaring Thursday as the last day of fasting and Friday as Eid ul Fitr.
This announcement is significant as many countries follow Saudi Arabia’s moon-sighting decision when determining their own Eid dates.
Why Eid ul Fitr 2026 is on March 20
Eid ul Fitr marks the end of Ramadan, the ninth month of the Islamic calendar. Since the Shawwal moon was not sighted, Ramadan will complete 30 days in Saudi Arabia this year.
Global Impact of Saudi Announcement
The Eid date announced by Saudi Arabia often influences several countries, especially in the Middle East and parts of Europe. However, countries like Pakistan and India may confirm Eid based on local moon sighting.
