Pakistan has called for diplomatic efforts to ease rising tensions involving Iran, warning that threats or the use of force would further destabilize an already fragile region. The appeal came during a United Nations Security Council meeting focused on the situation in the Middle East.

Pakistan’s Position at the UN

Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad, Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the UN, addressed the Security Council on January 15, 2026. He stressed that all disputes should be resolved peacefully and in accordance with international law. The ambassador expressed serious concern over recent threats and actions that could escalate conflict.

He stated, “The threat or use of force would only aggravate the situation and undermine regional and international peace and stability.” Pakistan is closely monitoring developments in Iran and the surrounding region, emphasizing the importance of restraint and responsible conduct by all parties.

Emphasis on Pakistan-Iran Relations

Highlighting the close historical, cultural, and religious ties between Pakistan and Iran, Ambassador Ahmad referred to Iran as a “brotherly country” and an immediate neighbor. He expressed hope for a swift normalization of the situation in Iran and voiced support for diplomatic initiatives aimed at fostering peace and stability in the region.

He added, “A stable and peaceful Iran is in the interest of Pakistan, the region and beyond,” and expressed confidence in the Iranian people and leadership to overcome current challenges.

Respect for International Law

The Pakistani envoy underscored the importance of adhering to the principles of the UN Charter, which prohibits the threat or use of force against the sovereignty of any state. He condemned external interference in domestic affairs as inconsistent with international law and urged all parties to avoid actions that could further threaten regional and global security.

Call for Dialogue and Negotiation

Ambassador Ahmad emphasized that diplomacy and dialogue must guide efforts to resolve conflicts. Pakistan has consistently advocated for engagement rather than confrontation in a region already facing significant instability. He expressed hope that all sides will return to negotiations to achieve a lasting solution based on mutual respect.

Context: US Sanctions and Tensions

These remarks come amid heightened tensions following recent US sanctions targeting Iranian officials accused of suppressing protests. The US Treasury Department imposed sanctions on five Iranian figures linked to the crackdown on demonstrations and warned of tracking funds allegedly moved abroad by Iranian leaders.

US officials reiterated support for the Iranian people’s calls for freedom and justice, with President Donald Trump warning of possible intervention. The unrest in Iran began with protests over rising prices and has since become one of the most significant challenges to the Iranian establishment since 1979.
