Pakistan and Tajikistan Reaffirm Commitment to Strengthen Bilateral Ties and Trade
In a move to enhance regional connectivity and strengthen diplomatic relations, Pakistan and Tajikistan have reaffirmed their mutual commitment to expand bilateral cooperation into a long-term economic partnership. Following high-level discussions between Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and President Emomali Rahmon, both nations highlighted opportunities for increased commercial exchange, energy alignment, and cross-border transit development.
The engagement reflects a shared objective to connect regional markets and provide landlocked Central Asian trade routes access to southern maritime facilities.
Expanding Commercial and Economic Relations
A primary focus of the bilateral talks was addressing the need to increase trade volumes between the two countries. To achieve this, both leaderships agreed to explore trade facilitation tools—including potential preferential trade frameworks and structured trade targets—to support commercial activities in agriculture, textiles, pharmaceuticals, and manufacturing.
Key points from the bilateral framework include:
Partnership Enhancement: Transitioning framework agreements toward comprehensive economic, commercial, and cultural cooperation.
Transit Facilitation: Supporting commercial access via southern port networks in Karachi and Gwadar to streamline international trade for Tajikistan.
Sectoral Working Groups: Activating Joint Working Groups across key areas such as industrial production, energy management, and digital services to support investment projects.
CASA-1000 and Regional Energy Initiatives
Energy collaboration remains an important aspect of bilateral relations, particularly through the Central Asia-South Asia Electricity Transmission and Trade Project (CASA-1000). Designed to transmit renewable hydroelectric power from Tajikistan and the Kyrgyz Republic to South Asia, the initiative aims to support regional energy requirements.
During their talks, both sides expressed interest in advancing the infrastructure necessary to bring the transmission lines into operation, supporting regional energy stability.
Transport Links, Aviation, and Travel Facilitation
To support commercial travel and supply chain movement, both nations discussed removing logistical barriers:
Travel Facilitation: Streamlining entry procedures for business representatives and official delegations to encourage commercial visits and tourism.
Air Connectivity: Updating agreements between civil aviation authorities to support direct flight links between Dushanbe and major urban hubs in Pakistan.
Regional Transit Frameworks: Supporting Tajikistan’s participation in multi-country transportation agreements to facilitate smooth freight movement across borders.
Educational and Cultural Engagement
Alongside economic and infrastructure topics, both nations emphasized the importance of academic and cultural exchange. Joint educational initiatives, university research programs, and tourism promotion frameworks were highlighted to encourage closer social and cultural connections.
