Urban Flooding Threat Looms Over Rawalpindi, Islamabad
ISLAMABAD / RAWALPINDI — Heavy downpours across the twin cities of Rawalpindi and Islamabad have triggered widespread urban flooding fears, with weather authorities forecasting continued wet spells driven by strong monsoon currents and an approaching westerly wave.
The continuous rain has inundated low-lying sectors, choked main arteries, and prompted emergency civic bodies to go on high alert.
Heavy Rain Inundates Low-Lying Areas
Intermittent heavy rainfall across the capital region has disrupted daily life and created severe municipal challenges:
Traffic & Arterial Disruption: Water accumulation along major routes—including the GT Road stretch toward DHA Phase-II, Adiala Road, and downtown commercial hubs—has led to severe traffic congestion and stranded commuters.
Slush and Construction Mud: Ongoing construction works in areas such as Ganjmandi and Saidpur Road worsened conditions, turning streets into muddy slush tracks.
Precipitation Breakdown: Significant rainfall recorded in the region includes over 106 mm in Murree, 28 mm at Saidpur, 22 mm at Zero Point (Islamabad), and up to 9 mm across key urban stations in Rawalpindi.
Rising Threat Around Nullah Leh
The chief concern for city administration centers on Nullah Leh (Leh Nullah) and connected municipal drains, which carry elevated risk during intense downpours:
Slow Desilting & Clogged Drains: Delays and scaling back of desilting operations along the 18-kilometer Leh Nullah channel—particularly in cantonment zones—have left critical choke points vulnerable.
At-Risk Localities: Densely populated low-lying communities including Gawalmandi, Javed Colony, Nadeem Colony, Fazalabad, and Dhoke Hassu remain under close monitoring for potential water overflows.
High Alert & Emergency Preparedness
In response to the Met Office (PMD) and National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) alerts, regional disaster management teams have mobilized response mechanisms:
Rescue & Civic Agencies: Teams from the Water and Sanitation Agency (WASA), Rescue 1122, Civil Defence, and district administration have deployed heavy machinery and de-watering pumps to high-risk bottlenecks.
Relief Camps & Control Rooms: Emergency relief centers in designated government facilities have been placed on standby, while joint flood control rooms conduct round-the-clock water-level tracking along Nullah Leh and the Soan River.
