The Gaza conflict is taking on added layers of complexity as Israel extends its military operations to target Hezbollah, creating a potentially broader regional confrontation, according to Mohammed Cherkaoui, a conflict resolution professor at George Mason University.
Cherkaoui suggests that an unknown actor in the Middle East may be attempting to instigate a clash with Hezbollah, possibly as a maneuver to manage one conflict by initiating another. This escalation from Gaza to Lebanon could then escalate further into a wider regional conflict.
Cherkaoui emphasizes that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is running out of strategic options and may be seeking to garner increased support from Western nations.
“He doesn’t have the upper hand in Gaza, so he wants to maximize support from the West,” Cherkaoui remarked, highlighting the complex geopolitical dynamics at play in the region.
