Punjab Chief Minister Mohsin Naqvi inaugurated the province’s first plastic-made road in Lahore on Monday.

The chief minister stated on the occasion that the road was developed in a relatively short amount of time. He claims that this is the first time a road has been constructed entirely of plastic.

Inaugurated Punjab's first plastic road, Zafar Ali Road in Lahore, sets a shining example.
By using plastic in construction, we're not only extending road life in a cost effective way but also making strides in plastic waste management. Together, we pave the way to a cleaner… pic.twitter.com/6sauri0I1E

He claims the road is environmentally benign and will not be affected by standing water. He stated that similar roads would be constructed in other sections of Lahore. It is significantly less expensive than other roadways, and environmentally hazardous plastic garbage will now be used here, according to the chief minister.

He stated that the government will outsource the road plastic manufacturing factory. He stated that the goal is to decrease and better utilise the plastic trash that pollutes the environment.

Earlier in July, the interim Chief Minister requested a plan to create plastic roads, as an in-principle agreement to implement such roads in the province had been made.

These plastic roads are more durable than traditional coal tar-made roads because they are less prone to breaking. He underlined the significance of openness and high-quality standards in road construction projects.

A petroleum business in Karachi has taken an important step towards minimising plastic waste and encouraging ecologically friendly practices by establishing a plastic-infused road.

Shell Pakistan announced a partnership with BRR Enterprises and the District Municipal Corporation (DMC) South to build a novel road made of recycled lubricant bottles.

Over 2.5 tonnes of abandoned Shell lubricant bottles were successfully recycled to build a 730-foot-long, 60-foot-wide driveway close to the Shell House in Karachi.

The company substantially decreased plastic waste while contributing to a more sustainable and environmentally conscientious solution by embedding these plastic bottles into the asphalt road utilising the dry process method.

Due to its non-biodegradability and poisonous nature, plastic trash has long been a major source of concern. According to studies, a basic plastic bag can take up to 500 years to degrade, whilst a plastic bottle can endure for about 300 years.

Over typical roads, plastic roads have various advantages. They are noted for their greater flexibility, durability, and a lifespan that is approximately three times that of normal roads.

Furthermore, traditional road construction materials are more expensive, but plastics may be obtained at a low cost, greatly lowering construction costs. This innovation not only offers a long-term solution but also addresses the critical social issue of plastic waste.
