Pakistan Pitches Ports, Logistics Sector To Chinese Investors In Beijing
BEIJING / ISLAMABAD — Pakistan has formally invited Chinese enterprises to expand their investments in its maritime, port, and logistics sectors. Speaking at the Regional Transit Trade Hub Initiative business forum in Beijing, Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs Muhammad Junaid Anwar Chaudhry outlined Pakistan’s strategy to position itself as a major regional trade, transit, and transshipment hub connecting Central Asia, the Middle East, and global markets.
1. Key Areas of Investment & Strategic Vision
The maritime ministry highlighted several key infrastructure and commercial opportunities designed to build on the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) framework:
Port Modernization & Infrastructure: Opportunities for Chinese firms across major maritime authorities, including the Karachi Port Trust (KPT), Port Qasim Authority (PQA), and Gwadar Port Authority (GPA).
Logistics & Multimodal Transport: Focus on developing modern logistics parks, warehousing, multimodal transport corridors, and digital trade facilitation to streamline regional supply chains.
Fleet & Shipping Support: Strengthening capabilities through collaboration with the Pakistan National Shipping Corporation (PNSC).
2. Gwadar Port: The Core CPEC Flagship
Highlighting Gwadar Port as the focal point of Pakistan-China maritime cooperation, Minister Chaudhry emphasized that Gwadar offers immediate high-value investment avenues:
Free Zone Development: Opportunities in special economic and industrial free zones.
Port Operations & Warehousing: Upgrading cold-chain logistics, storage facilities, and deep-sea berth operations.
Maritime Services & Value Addition: Expanding industrial manufacturing and maritime support services near deep-water access.
3. Entering a New Phase of Strategic Economic Partnership
The initiative signals a transition into an upgraded phase of the Pakistan-China All-Weather Strategic Partnership, focusing on sustainable economic growth, green shipping, and resilient supply chain networks.
