Saudi Arabia to Introduce Cable Car System for Easier Access to Hira Cave by 2025

RIYADH: Saudi Arabia has announced plans to launch a cable car system by 2025, designed to improve access to the historic Cave of Hira, located on Mecca’s Jabal Al Noor. This site is of significant religious importance, as it is where the Prophet Mohammed (PBUH) received his first revelation.

The cable car will connect visitors to the cave, situated approximately 634 meters above sea level and about 4 kilometers from the Grand Mosque. This initiative is part of a broader development project that also includes the creation of the Hira Cultural District and the opening of three new museums in Jabal Omar, all scheduled for completion in the same year. Additionally, the Mount Thor Cultural District, an integrated neighborhood offering various services, will also be launched in 2025.

The Ministry of Hajj and Umrah emphasized the cultural and religious significance of Mount Al Noor and the Cave of Hira in Islamic heritage. Known as the Mountain of Light, Jabal Al Noor is distinguished by its unique shape, resembling a camel’s hump, and its steep terrain. The cave, which can seat five individuals, is a key site for Muslims due to its connection with the Prophet’s early revelations.

Previously, accessing the cave was challenging due to the mountain’s rugged terrain. However, the recent construction of a paved road has made the journey easier. Fawaz Al-Muhrej, CEO of Samaya Investment Company, which is overseeing the project, confirmed that the cable car system is on track to open in 2025, with final preparations currently underway.
